I had the pleasure of interviewing the extraordinary Laura Stein last week. Laura is a talented interior designer based out of Toronto, Ontario. Laura is known for taking understated classic spaces and infusing them with a fresh contemporary edge. She describes her signature style as thoughtful, inspired and refined. She started her design firm, Laura Stein Interiors after a calculated decision to change careers back in 2006. She had previously worked in art direction and graphic design. Laura notes that she was no longer excited about her work as everything was crafted on a flat piece of paper. She dreamed of being able to touch, feel and interact with her creations. This led her to the two-dimensional world of interior design. Laura went back to school and eventually landed a position with the production company for HGTV. She learned the ins and outs of the trade and eventually started designing for her own clients in 2006. The featured photos are from a project she has named “The Kingsway Home.”

Below: How fabulous is this dinning room? I love how Laura paired these silver upholstered dinning chairs with gold lighting and accessories. Check out those beautiful mirrored wall sconces!
The porcelain vases add a pop of personality and pull in all of the blue accents from the living room.
The feminine artwork leaned against this gorgeous wallpaper adds the right amount of class and sophistication.
This is another room in the Kingsway Home. I’m loving all of the fabric combinations!
Laura’s designs are inspired by travel, fashion and shapes found in everyday life. The driving force behind her business is the idea that your surroundings affect how you feel. She notes that one of the ingredients for happiness is surrounding yourself with things that are beautiful and inspiring. Laura was influenced by the work of designers: Dorothy Draper, Barbara Barry and Billy Baldwin. She was also influenced by bold, independent women in her personal and professional life. These women taught her that you can do what you’re passionate about in life and still be successful at it. Laura loves playing with pattern, textures and colour. She sources furniture and materials from a variety of places including online catalogues and furniture markets. Laura has even gone as far as Europe to select pieces for a client’s home. If she can’t find what she envisioned for the space, she is also known to design a custom piece. Laura’s goal is always to design a space that is functional and caters to her client’s lifestyle.
